Import Wizard: How to Connect Any Marketing Data to Your Dashboard

Marketers shouldn’t be limited to services with external APIs only. The Data Import Wizard in TapAnalytics functions like a manual version of a service integration that allows you to assimilate any marketing data seamlessly into your dashboard and automated reports.

The Data Import Wizard released in TapAnalytics 5.7 gives users the flexibility to take offline data and import it directly into your dashboard.  We have built a highly flexible tool that enables users to bring in a wide variety of data. This guide will provide an overview of how to use the Data Import Wizard.

Prepping your Data for Import

To limit the chance of errors with your data, it should follow some basic parameters:

  • No empty rows or cells. The Importer doesn’t require fancy formatting – just the data.
  • The first row is considered your Header Row. All field names will come from the top row.
  • Your account information for Google Drive, Dropbox or FTP

Getting Started – Setting Up Your New Import Service

After signing in, scroll down to Administration and select Import Wizard.

From the Import Wizard screen, select the Add Service button:

Name Your New Import Service

Once you have selected the Add Service button, you will be taken to the Service Settings screen. Here you will fill out the details of your new service.

Add a name and icon. Your new service will live in the Manage Services dashboard, so you should give it a unique name and choose an icon from our awesome icon library to help it stand out. Want a background color other than blue? Select a new color from the color picker.

Setting Your Mapping Fields

In the raw output of some services, the fields don’t provide enough context to the average user. The Import Wizard allows you to alter the names of data fields to make them more relevant. The mapping function compares the raw names (from your file) with the names you want to show within your dashboard. This step is only required the first time a new service is added.

In the Data Fields box, select a data file that has all the information you want from your marketing service.

Upload the file and you will be directed to the mapping field layout. Ensure that you have a mapping field selected – this is your most important field that all data will be keyed from. Also select a date field to ensure that your data will show up correctly in the data charts. A Unique field is also required. This is a data point that will always be unique – often something like an Ad Name, Account Name/Number or (in this example) Client Name is our unique name.

File Delivery – Setting the Location of the Source File

This is the understated hero of the Import Wizard. By putting the date at the end of the file name (you will define below), the wizard will be able to tell which file is new. What this means is that once you define a file path, the wizard will regularly check for new data – with no required action from you! But first, the location (directory) of the data files needs to be set. You have the option of using FTP, SFTP, Google Drive or Dropbox.

  • Select your service (Google Drive in this example)
  • Type in the folder location (where the files will be stored)
  • Select the date format at the end of the file name. In this example, the file date is mm-dd-yyyy
  • Add an email address to send notifications/updates
  • When all done, click Save Changes

Assigning Clients

After connecting your new service, we will go through the familiar steps of assigning Clients. Your custom services now looks and functions exactly like an API service, except you control the flow of data and names of fields. How slick is that?

Before we get too far, click the Manage Services icon, find your new service in the Services list and click Assign to Clients.

Select a Client Name (this is the Unique Field we selected earlier) and map to a client (new or existing).

Click Assign Clients and refresh your dashboard.

Almost Done. Now Check Your Data!

This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Go to your services, and select your new service (in this example, My First Service). Your data should be populating and there you have it – a brand new custom service built by the Import Data Wizard.
